For proper enlightenment, let us look at the meaning of the word ‘empower’ according to Oxford dictionary which means – “To make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights”.
It is alarming how the society constantly idolize men as symbol of supremacy; that is, they possess the authority to dominate the activities around his immediate environment including the women.
The result of this ignorant appraisal birthed educated modern day women who are still less empowered in our society.
The boy and girl child should be taught to respect one another. The meaning of authority should be clearly defined by the parents. Parents should teach and portray a leadership lifestyle that encourages equality of the mind to their children and also encourage open communication.
The girl child should not be raised timid but confident while the boy child should be raised to understand that authority can be shared and not fueled by pride.
The submission of a woman should not be categorized as weakness or inability to exercise authority.
Men are consciously raised to control which explains why most men do not empower women due to fear of loss of dormancy but when the world realize that (it takes two “man and woman” to tango) there will be a shift in the equality and empowerment narrative; the narrative of comradeship and partnership.
When men set aside their pride and support women, a whole nation is empowered and enlightened; women should not be relegated to mundane activities and not be treated as such.
During one of our sessions, two feedback on equality from two different men were noted:
The First man- “I don’t believe in equality because women are too emotional and don’t know how to rule. They are cruel and don’t forgive easily. They need a man to control them”.
The Second man said – “I think equality is needed and we need to start treating people equally and not based by gender. If we start now, the upcoming generation will have a different mindset”.
As a man reading this article, which party do you belong? Many men are scared of losing control over the woman and some men feel equality is a state of the mind.
You will agree that we need to work on togetherness:
At Imeyreach Foundation, we believe that for girls to be free, boys need to know what freedom means. We visit schools and communities to give mental empowerment to youth to becoming a better person for themselves and their community.
