Body shaming is the action or practice of humiliating someone by making mocking or critical comments about their physical appearance.
Daily, women are faced with criticism, mockery, embarrassment, and humiliation on the bus, at work, in religious and social gatherings, on social media, at the market, etc because of their physical appearance.
They hear statements like Too Fat, Too Thin, Too Short, Too Tall, Too Skinny, Too Curvy, Too everything, Not Curvy enough, and the list is endless.
Society and culture have set a ridiculous standard of what should be a perfect body and who is beautiful or sexy and the aim to achieve this standard has led to a lot of temporary and permanent consequences like low self-esteem, social isolation, depression, starvation, excessive eating or eating disorder, medical accidents, or suicide.
Therefore making derogatory remarks or disguised compliments about the woman’s physical appearance is unacceptable. Stop saying mean words and excusing yourself for caring about their health.
No one should be shamed, compared, or judged by their body structure. There should be no standard of how a body should be because everyone is unique, and it is the imperfections that make us peculiar and beautiful.
The body should be encouraged to be healthy and not shamed and forced through pain to embrace a healthy living.
Be your kind of beautiful without any apologies. Be Healthy!!
Be proud of your body and don’t let anyone make you feel less of a woman. Don’t body shame yourself and don’t body shame others. You are perfect the way you are.
Girls Be Free is a project by ImeyReach Foundation to encourage young girls to be free from cultural limitations and grow to be a woman of worth.
